Our Church Council

Pastor Phil Whitener

Rev. Dr. Phil WhitenerReverend Doctor Phil Whitener, a native of North Carolina, is the pastor at Ascension. He received his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Concordia University, River Forest, Illinois, a Master of Divinity Degree from Lutheran Southern Seminary, Columbia, South Carolina, and a Doctor of Ministry Degree from Memphis Theological Seminary, Memphis Tennessee. Pastor Phil has served congregations in South Carolina and Florida over the past 30 years. He and his wife, Mary, have a son and a daughter, and a granddaughter.




Ken CurrieKen Currie joined our church on 3/10/2010. He is originally from Essex, Iowa. After he and his wife, Dawn, both retired from the Air Force, they moved to Florida. Ken served in many roles before becoming Council President in June, 2015. He enjoys serving as an Assistant Minister and teaching adult Bible study. He has a son, daughter-in-law, and two grandchildren. 



Vice President

Chuck DeanChuck Dean - Chuck Dean joined Ascension on September 11, 2016. He is originally from Uniontown, PA. After retiring from Anesthesia and Pam retiring as a Registered Nurse, they moved to Florida. Chuck is organizing a men’s fellowship group and also serves as an Usher.




Mary McCartyMary McCarty a former associate member, became a full member of our church on 2/16/2011. She comes to us from Liberty, NY. She is a retired Professor of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. In addition to serving on the Church Council as our Treasurer, she enjoys singing in our choir, serving as Assistant Minster, 4th Wednesday Luncheons, and attending Adult Sunday School. She also will host an AARP TaxAide site at Ascension in February 2017.



Sid WiseSid Wise joined our church in 1993. He was born in Painesville, Ohio and moved numerous times growing up as his father was in the Air Force. Sid served in the Air Force for 26 years and also worked in financial services (6 years), served as a juvenile probation officer (4 years), and is Co-Owner (with sons) of Wise Traffic School. Sid also serves as Stewardship Chairman and Head Usher. He and his wife, Sandra, have two sons, and three grandchildren.

Sue SorensonSue Sorensen joined our church on 3/24/2002. She is originally from Urbandale, Iowa. A former teacher, Sue now works as a realtor in Brevard County. She enjoys serving as the Worship Team leader and singing in the choir. She has a son, two daughters, 12 grandchildren, and one great granddaughter. 




Member at Large

Merle StewardMerle Steward was raised on a farm near St. Ansgar, Iowa. After graduation he joined the Army and was a medic. From there Merle moved to Rochester Minnesota and became a firefighter for the city. He retired from the fire department in 1997 and took up wood working and have made a bedroom set, kitchen cabinets and other furniture for our house in Indialantic. He and his wife, Pamela, moved to  Florida in 1999. They joined the church June 22, 2008.

Steve WagnerSteve Wagner joined our church on 6/6/2004. He is a Nuclear Medicine technologist who was born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. In addition to being a Council Member at Large, he serves as an usher and Assistant Minister. He and his wife, Diane, have two sons and one daughter.

Bev GallowayBev Galloway joined our church on 4/13/2003. She is originally from Lansdale, Pennsylvania. Bev is a Billing and Claims Manager and former Branch Manager of a local financial institution. In addition to the council, she serves in the Altar Guild, W/ELCA, Chime Choir, Crucifer, and Usher. 



Member at Large


Beverly SemovoskiBeverly Semovoski - joined our church on 10/18/2015. She is an Air Force Brat and an Air Force veteran. Beverly is married to David and they have two boys; Joshua and Matthew and a granddaughter, Samantha. After 25 years in the Washington DC area, Dave and Bev moved to Florida. Beverly provides launch support at Cape Canaveral. She has served as Sunday School Teacher, Confirmation Teacher, Council member, Chaired the Education Committee, and the Altar Guild.
